At some stage in its existence, this Late Federation house had undergone additions and alterations – the detailing was confused, and the interior flow did not work.
We recommended an architect to address the exterior and we concentrated on the interior design. It is home to a family of six unpretentious individuals whose main brief was to make the house ‘work’ and reflect their casual friendly lifestyle. Spaces that were unused or dark and uninviting needed purpose and light.
Our concept created a new design language for the home, linking spaces, unifying materials, and redefining the floorplan to create useful areas and retreats for the family. Our strategy focused on a tonal palette with layers of texture and natural materials. Furniture pieces heroed craftsmanship with soft curves reflecting the interior architecture.
Starting at the southern side of the house we created intimate spaces in darker palettes – for working and studying – opening up to the lighter family living spaces on the northern side. We took advantage of this aspect – creating an indoor/outdoor flow in sync with the materials selection and design intent.
Collaboration with the architects was crucial to the success of the project in improving natural light in both the north and south aspects.
