Our experienced and highly regarded studio of award-winning interior designers is committed to responding to our clients’ brief and lifestyle, creating original, authentic and individual interiors that stand the test of time.

We are equally defined by the result of our work and the experience we create in the process. We collaborate with architects, landscapers, builders and artisans who share our commitment to excellence and are passionate about their craft. Together we deliver creative, intelligent, practical and cohesive interiors – be they residential or hospitality projects.

Our Approach

We are often asked how we work, what projects we take on and the process once we are engaged as interior designers. Below we aim to demystify the process.

Our design philosophy is centred on enriching lives through design, with a commitment to well resolved and cohesive outcomes. As such, we focus on projects that we are able to realise in their entirety and therefore are not able to take on small consulting work, styling or parts of projects.

Our multi-award winning practice has built a reputation for approaching projects in a considered and collaborative way. We offer a full interior design service, from concept through to completion, delivering professional well-documented solutions that exceed expectations and add value to projects. Our attention to detail is evident through the entire design and decorative process.

Our process for each project – no matter whether it be a new home or renovation – is as follows:-

  • STAGE 1 – Initial Concepts + Ideas

    In consultation we establish your brief and aspirations, the scope of work and your budget – this guides the process + our journey together.

    We then prepare and present space planning options and initial interior concepts, layered with preliminary selections of finishes, furniture + lighting.

    The goal of this stage is to develop a conceptual design direction that responds to both the aesthetic and functional requirements of your future home.

  • STAGE 2 – Design Development

    Once you have approved the conceptual stage, a rigorous process ensues whereby the initial ideas are crafted into a unique design language. At this stage, we develop and present –

    • Plans and elevations of key areas, including kitchens, bathrooms and joinery throughout
    • Preliminary fixtures, fittings and appliance selections
    • Schematic designs of features, including staircases, fireplaces etc
    • Lighting design intent – layouts and fittings
    • Furniture and furnishings

  • STAGE 3 – Construction

    This is the phase where the design starts to take shape and becomes a reality.

    We complete documentation for the tender process + assist with the evaluation of tenders.

    We liaise and collaborate with other consultants – architects, landscape architects, engineers, A/C, audio, etc – and integrate their documentation.

    After final sign off of the documentation and costing, our drawings and schedules are issued for construction. We attend site, consultant and client meetings to ensure the design is executed to plan!

    During this stage, the vision for your home is completed with the final selection of furniture + furnishings. Estimates of furnishings are obtained for approval, then finalised for sign off.

  • STAGE 4 – Your Finished Home

    We manage all aspects of transforming your house into a completed, comfortable and beautiful home.

    As the building comes to completion, we focus of the procurement of furnishings including –

    • Quality control of all furnishings procured
    • Delivery coordination and installation of furnishings on completion of project
    • Installation of window furnishings
    • Artwork and accessories placement

    This is the best part of every project and the most rewarding.

Our People

Hare + Klein – led by Meryl Hare – is a team of creative designers who have ensured that the practice has maintained its position as one of Australia’s leading interior design studios for nearly 3 decades.

Our successful outcomes are attributed to our team’s consistency, wealth of experience and passionate commitment to providing the most creative and practical interior solutions for our clients.

Principal Meryl Hare started Hare + Klein in 1989. She is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, has received a citation for services to the design industry, was inducted to the DIA Hall of Fame in 2011, the Australian House & Garden Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Belle Fanuli Interior Design Awards Hall of Fame in 2021. Meryl was also awarded the Gold Medal at the IDEA Awards in 2020. She has published two books with Thames & Hudson – Hare + Klein ‘Texture Colour Comfort’ (2014 + 2018 compact edition) and Hare + Klein ‘Interior’ (2020) and won a Gold Award for Product Design in Australia’s International Good Design Awards for her design of ‘The Bridge Table’.
